Rivals friendly at photo shoot... to a point

Jul 26, 2013

CULVER CITY, Calif. -- Before the podium sessions began at 2013 Pac-12 Football Media Day, it was time for a quick photo shoot on the grounds of Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City, Calif. Gathering around the Pac-12 Championship, Rose Bowl and Coaches' trophies, many of the 36 coaches and student-athletes representing their universities weren't shy to chat it up with some guys they'll be lining up and plotting against on future Saturdays.

Perhaps it's because the two don't play each other this season, but Stanford head coach David Shaw and new Colorado head honcho Mike MacIntyre were quick to engage in conversation. Oregon's Ifo Ekpre-Olomu and Arizona State's Will Sutton exchanged pleasantries while other student-athletes found peers wearing different-colored polos to say a quick hello. And, in what will probably be the only time this year, Steve Sarkisian and Mike Leach could be found smiling side-by-side situated in front of the Coaches' Trophy even before it was time to say "cheese" for the camera.

But make no mistake -- the rivalries still run deep. As Brandin Cooks and Rashaad Reynolds were being directed to take a knee in front, one of the photography directors accidentally referred to the two as Oregon.

"You mean Oregon State," Cooks quipped before getting down on one knee.
