CANONSBURG, Pa. – Joël Stalter and Max Homa opened action at the Web.com Tour’s Mylan Classic playing as amateurs at the Web.com Tour event on Thursday at the par-71, 6,951-yard Southpointe Golf Club. Stalter is tied for 77th after his first-round two-over par 73, while Homa is tied for 97th after a three-over 74. Stalter’s score was the best of six amateurs in the 144-player field.

The top 60 players plus ties after the conclusion of 36 holes scheduled to end Friday will make the cut. There are 17 players tied for 60th at one-over par following Thursday’s first round, one stroke ahead of Stalter and two in front of Homa.

Stalter had four birdies in his round on the par-three fifth, par-four eighth and in back-to-back fashion on the par-four 15th and 16th. But he also had back-to-back double bogeys on the par-four sixth and seventh holes and two straight bogeys on the par-four first and second.

Both acknowledged difficulty in their rounds but enjoyed playing as amateurs in a professional event.

“It was a tough start for me today, but the most important thing is I got it back,” Stalter said. “I didn’t let myself out of the round and now I have a shot to make the cut tomorrow. I just need to keep the momentum going. It’s a great learning experience here with so many great players and arguably the best field I have ever played in.”

Homa posted his lone birdie on the par-four fourth hole. He had bogeys on the par-four sixth and 10th holes, and a double bogey on the par-four 17th.

“It was a lot of fun but very disappointing,” Homa said. “I need to putt better.”

Golf Channel will continue television coverage of the event Friday (7-9 a.m. PT), Saturday (11 a.m. – 1 p.m.) and Sunday (11 a.m. – 1 p.m.).
