Aug 26, 2013

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- USC forward Elizabeth Eddy and STANFORD goalkeeper Emily Oliver were named Pac-12 Women’s Soccer Players of the Week for the week of August 19-25, Commissioner Larry Scott announced today.

Eddy, a senior from Newport Beach, Calif., was named Offensive Player of the Week after netting two goals in the Trojans 4-1 upset win over No. 11 San Diego State in the season opener on Friday at the University of San Diego Tournament. She scored the first goal of USC’s 2013 season in the seventh minute and added a second one on a breakaway in the 89th minute. On Sunday, Eddy made it a three-goal weekend as she had the final tally in a 4-2 victory to ensure a 2-0 start for the Trojans. She was named to the all-tournament team while moving up the career scoring ladder with 13 career goals, good for 12th all-time in team history.

Oliver, a four-year senior starter for the Cardinal, recorded 10 saves and a shutout on the weekend to earn Defensive Player of the Week honors as Stanford went 2-0 in their season-opening weekend on the East Coast. Nine of the saves came in a 2-1 double-overtime victory at Boston College on Friday, many of which kept the Cardinal in a tie with the Eagles and put them in a position to win. Oliver followed with a 1-0 shutout at Connecticut on Sunday, the 27th of her career.

This is Eddy’s first career weekly honor and USC’s 24th all-time player of the week. For Oliver, this marks her second player of the week accolade and Stanford’s 36th overall. Her first came in the last week of October in 2012. USC and Stanford both return home this weekend, with the Trojans hosting Cal State Northridge at 3 p.m. PT on Friday and the Cardinal taking on No. 22 Portland at 7 p.m. PT on Saturday.
