Brazinski Named First-Team Academic All-District 8

BERKELEY – Cal senior offensive lineman Mark Brazinski was selected Thursday to the 2013 Capital One Academic All-District 8 First-Team for NCAA Division I football.

“Years of work culminate into something like this,” Brazinski said. “I’m very grateful to be honored in this way and to be able to do it at the greatest university in the world. It makes a lot of those nights where you didn’t sleep very long worth it. I look forward to the next round and am hopeful I will be considered for Academic All-America® honors.”

All student-athletes selected as a first-team members within one of the nation’s eight districts are placed on the national ballot for Academic All-America® consideration.

“Mark represents everything that’s right about college football with his work ethic and academic prowess,” head coach Sonny Dykes said. “I’m very proud of this accomplishment that he so richly deserves to be honored and recognized for.”

Brazinski was a semifinalist for the 2013 William V. Campbell Trophy and a candidate for the National Football Foundation’s Scholar-Athlete Awards as well as the Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year. His additional academic honors include a first-team Pac-12 All-Academic selection in 2011.

Brazinski received two bachelor’s degrees (Business Administration, Media Studies) in his first three years at Cal and is now in his second year as a graduate student in Cal’s Masters of Information Management Systems at the School of Information. Brazinski posted a 3.58 GPA in his undergraduate work and has the same mark in his graduate courses.

On the field, Brazinski is a three-year letterwinner with the opportunity for a fourth in 2013 who has played in four games with the first three starts of his career as a senior in 2013. Overall, he has participated in nine games with three starts at Cal.


*Cal concludes its home season against USC this Saturday, Nov. 9 (Noon, FOX). The USC contest will also serve as Senior Day and the annual Joe Roth Game.

*The Pac-12 announced Monday that the Cal-Colorado game at Folsom Field in Boulder, Colo., on Saturday, Nov. 16 will kick off at 3:30 p.m. MT/2:30 p.m. PT. The contest will be televised live by Pac-12 Networks.

*Cal will close out its 2013 season at Stanford in the 116th Big Game on Saturday, Nov. 23. Telecast information and a kickoff time are scheduled to be announced either 12 or six days in advance of the contest.
