UCLA’s Canada Selected Freshman of the Week

SAN FRANCISCO - ARIZONA STATE’s Sophie Brunner was named the Pac-12 Player of the Week, while UCLA’s Jordin Canada was tabbed the Freshman of the Week, as announced by the Conference on Monday.

Sophomore forward Sophie Brunner (Freeport, Ill.) averaged 17.0 points and 7.7 rebounds while shooting .670 from the floor and .900 from the free-throw line to push ASU to three wins, over Washington State, 78-64, at Arizona, 88-41, and at home against Arizona, 71-54. Brunner scored a career-high 26 points, with 20 coming in the second half in ASU’s home win over Arizona, to help break open what was a three-point game at halftime. In that game, Brunner also added nine rebounds, an assist and a steal, while shooting 11-of-15 from the field and going 4-of-4 from the line. Arizona State has now won 11 straight games and Brunner is shooting .610 percent in that span.

UCLA’s freshman guard Jordin Canada (Los Angeles, Calif.) earns Freshman of the Week honors for the second time this year, after averaging 13.0 points and 7.5 assists per game in two road wins last week for UCLA over Utah, 49-46, and Colorado, 90-84.  After not playing in the Bruins’ loss to Oregon due to injury, Canada came out and scored a team-best 16 points with six rebounds in the win over Utah, which came without their leading scorer Nirra Fields.

A player of the week has been selected every week since 1986-87, the first year the Conference sponsored women’s sports. A freshman of the week was first selected in 2012-13.

Arizona State hits the road for a game against California on Friday Jan. 16 at 7 p.m. PT. UCLA will host crosstown rival USC on Sunday Jan. 18 at 7:30 p.m. PT. Both games will appear on Pac-12 Networks.
