Pac-12 moves gymnastics championship to University of Utah

Feb 12, 2015

SAN FRANCISCO – The 2015 Pac-12 Women’s Gymnastics Championship has been relocated to the University of Utah and will take place on Saturday, Mar. 21 with sessions starting at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. MT, the Conference announced today. The event was previously scheduled to take place at Arizona State University, but due to possible scheduling conflicts with preliminary rounds of the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament, the championship will be moved to Salt Lake City.

For the first time this year, the top-16 teams in the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament will host first- and second-round games. The No. 12 Sun Devil women’s basketball team could be in position to host, and per NCAA rules, must do so on the Arizona State campus. The dates for these first and second rounds of the tournament conflict with the Pac-12 Gymnastics Championship, previously scheduled to take place at Wells Fargo Arena at Arizona State.

In addition, the unique nature of gymnastics makes moving to another local venue potentially unsafe for student-athletes, as set up often calls for the equipment to be secured to the subfloor of the arena. In order to provide safe and quality facilities for student-athletes, the Pac-12 membership voted to move the event to the Huntsman Center at Utah.

Utah hosted the Pac-12 Gymnastics Championship in 2012, the university’s first season as a member of the Conference. The meet drew a crowd of 19,734 over two sessions and provided student-athletes with a wonderful championship atmosphere.

Tickets will be available on pac-12.com/tickets, on utahtickets.com, and through the Utah box office in the coming days. The Pac-12 will make another announcement when tickets go on sale in the near future. Those who previously purchased tickets through Arizona State or made hotel and travel arrangements are encouraged to contact “Sparky Cares” at Arizona State (SparkyCares@asu.edu). These matters will be handled on a case-by-case basis.

Pac-12 Networks will televise the 2015 Pac-12 Women’s Gymnastics Championship as part of its 21-total event package this season. Live TV coverage of the event that day will be broken into two sessions starting at 1 p.m. PT/2 p.m. MT on Pac-12 Networks. Broadcasts feature the talent of play-by-play experts Jim Watson and Brian Webber, joined by analysts Amanda Borden and Amanda Pflugrad.
