Cal's Luke Rubenzer picks off another Bears quarterback

Apr 18, 2015

There's no doubt that Jared Goff is Cal's starting quarterback heading into the 2015 season, but competition for the backup spot is heating up. Sophomore Luke Rubenzer and freshman Chase Forrest both have been taking snaps behind Goff this spring, and both have looked good, but Rubenzer has made a statement as...a safety?

The Scottsdale, Arizona native has been trying out the new position and is making the most of the opportunity so far. Rubenzer picked off Goff twice in a mid-March practice, according to California Golden Blogs. Despite the fact that a penalty negated the first interception, that is no easy feat.

During the Cal Spring Football Experience on Saturday in Berkeley, Rubenzer turned his focus to his competition, intercepting Forrest in the first half. He may be earning himself more playing time – just on the defensive side of the ball.
