May 8, 2015

BOULDER - The 2015 Pac-12 Track and Field Championship officially get underway on Saturday, May 9 with the heptathlon and decathlon taking main stage for two days on the campus of UCLA.

Junior Abrianna Torres will led the group of five CU athletes, four women and one man. She currently ranks second in the Pac-12 in the heptathlon with 5,445 points. That score, which she recorded at the Mt. SAC Relays, put her third on CU's all-time performers list. She was third in the heptathlon in 2013 and placed eighth in 2014. Torres has been having an outstanding season and is poised to do well at this year's meet after winning the pentathlon at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Indoor Track and Field Championships in February.

Freshman Michaela Wenning, junior Ewelina Pena and sophomore Mariah Slack will join Torres in the heptathlon. Wenning ranks 10th in the league (4,542), while Pena is 11th (4,488). Slack isn't far behind at 13th (4,340).

Freshman Andrew Ghizzone is the only CU male competing this weekend in the decathlon. This will be just his second decathlon for the Buffs. His first decathlon was at Mt. SAC Relays where he recorded a score of 6,603 which ranks 11th in the conference.

This weekend's action will conclude on Sunday, May 10. The rest of the championship will be May 16-17, also in L.A. The Bruins will host the meet at Drake Stadium in Los Angeles.
