Arizona State gets fortunate bounces on 2 TDs in win vs. Colorado

Oct 10, 2015

Arizona State was both lucky and good in its 48-23 victory over Colorado Saturday night, scoring two touchdowns on would-be turnovers or turnover-on-downs.

In the first quarter, ASU running back Demario Richard fumbled on a short carry but the ball somehow squirted out to an all-alone Kody Kohl, who went untouched 28 yards to the end zone.

To top that, facing a fourth-and-2 on the first possession of the second half, quarterback Mike Bercovici’s pass was tipped and nearly intercepted but found its way into the arms of Tim White for a 38-yard score.

The fortunate bounces were far from the main reason why the Sun Devils improved to 4-2 Saturday night. Bercovici threw five touchdown passes, Tim White had a career-high 144 receiving yards and Arizona State converted two Colorado turnovers into 14 points, while the Buffs were unable to score off the Sun Devils’ lone giveaway. Never hurts to have a little luck, though.

Don’t count Arizona State out of the Pac-12 South race despite losing its season opener and conference opener. It’s still very early, but the Sun Devils control their own destiny to Santa Clara.

For Colorado, it probably feels like more of the same. In its season opener, Colorado ran out of time on its final drive in a 28-20 loss at Hawai’i after the officials were unable to spot the ball when a Hawai’i player trotted into the path of the ball being tossed to be spotted at the line of scrimmage. It only feels like a matter of time before the Buffs will break through and get a signature Pac-12 victory.
