2018 Pac-12 Football Media Day: Stanford players talk about everything besides X's and O's with Ashley Adamson

Jul 25, 2018

Stanford wide receiver JJ Arcega-Whiteside and cornerback Alijah Holder descended upon 2018 Pac-12 Football Media Day to talk about team goals, individual improvements and what it's going to take for the Card to get back to the Pac-12 Football Championship Game.

And then there was their chat with Pac-12 Networks' Ashley Adamson, which covered pretty much every topic besides football.

First, Adamson dug deep and surprised the Cardinal standouts by telling them she knew their nicknames -- Bambi for Holder, Spider for Arcega-Whiteside -- and asking them to detail how they earned those names. (Former Stanford team captain and fellow defensive back Ronnie Harris once called Holder "Bambi" when picking him for a team competition during summer workouts, and former wide receiver Devon Cajuste told Arcega-Whiteside he looked like a spider when he ran routes.)

Next, Adamson, who had been exchanging e-mails with Holder's mother, Angela, got on Alijah for not texting mom enough.

"Oh we got beef now," Holder joked. "I call her back! I love calling my mom, I'll call her a little bit more. Mom, I'm calling you twice a day now."

"Angela, you're welcome," Adamson remarked.

Viewers also learned that Arcega-Whiteside, whose parents played pro basketball overseas, once rushed the court as a toddler when he saw his mother get tossed to the court by an opposing player and came to the defense of mom by kicking, screaming and yelling at the offending player.

"My mom was like, 'JJ, go back!' And she was like, 'Alright, that's my son,'" Arcega-Whiteside said.

And then there was Holder telling us about twin pranks he pulls. Alijah's twin brother, Mikah, plays football for San Diego State. His favorite prank? Impersonating Mikah when he goes to parties back in San Diego (where they are from) or is hanging with Mikah's friends.

"I'll walk around the party and I'll look at people in the eyes, but if I catch you lingering and it seems like I'm supposed to know you, I'm gonna walk up and I'm gonna engage," Holder said. "I'll be like, 'Hey, I'm Mikah... you should come meet my twin brother, he's visiting from out of town.'"

With so much ground covered, Adamson wanted to hammer home a final lesson, asking the two what they learned from the interview session.

Holder and Arcega-Whiteside didn't seem too interested in following along, however.

"We're going to ask you some questions," Holder said.

"No, the point was that you're going to call your moms," Adamson responded.

"Oh, that too," Arcega-Whiteside said.

"We're going to call our moms, and then we're going to ask you some questions," Holder added.

Adamson cut it off there. Too bad, maybe we could have learned Ashley's college nickname if the guys were able to press on.
