2018 Pac-12 Football Media Day: Team-wide book report helps Cal get ready for the season

It's a long offseason in college football, especially if a team misses out on a bowl game like Cal did by going 5-7 in 2017. Of course, that doesn't mean there's a lot of down time -- there's lifting to be done, sprints to be run, spring practices to be held, and in the case of the Golden Bears, books to be read.

That's right -- head coach Justin Wilcox had his guys to do a book report in the spring to help get a positive mindset for the upcoming season. The book in question was "The Traveler's Gift: Seven Decisions that Determine Personal Success" by Andy Andrews, and Wilcox ordered each position group to give a presentation on the book to the rest of the team, focusing on a message that each group took away from reading the book.

"The guys owned it. It was really cool to see," Wilcox told Pac-12 Networks' Mike Yam and Yogi Roth at 2018 Pac-12 Football Media Day. "I think they all got something out of it... it's a pretty simple read, but there's a lot to takeaway."

Talking with Ashley Adamson, linebacker Jordan Kunaszyk took credit for being a part of the best presenting group, noting that the LBs made a one-minute video revolving around the theme of "I will choose to be happy," a nod to Anne Frank.

For running back Patrick Laird, himself a big reader and founder of the Patrick Laird Summer Reading Challenge to promote reading to children, the book helped him focus on how to go about achieving lofty goals, like winning a Pac-12 title.

"It was about manifesting what you see could be done in the future. Our whole team -- Pac-12 championship, we talk about that all the time," Laird said. "What are the things we have to do to achieve that?"

Now all that's left is for Wilcox to give Yam a book to read.

"Coach, I typically go with the books that have more pictures. Please, I need a recommendation for the flight back home," Yam said, while Wilcox quipped "pop-up books?" in the background.

Green Eggs and Yam, anyone? I'm here all day, folks, or at least until the Pac-12 North teams finish talking with our studio squad.
