Utah Athletics Graduation Success Rate at 94 percent for Second Consecutive Year

Nov 17, 2020

SALT LAKE CITY – Ninety-four percent of student-athletes at the University of Utah graduated within six years of enrolling according to the latest NCAA Graduation Success Rate released today. The 94 percent graduation rate is the second highest in school history, and it is the fourth consecutive year that Utah's score has been over 90 percent.

Utah's 94 percent rate is tied for the second highest figure among Power 5 public institutions and tied for the fifth-highest score among all institutions at the Power 5 level. Duke, Notre Dame and Northwestern are the only private institutions to rank ahead of Utah.

"We are extremely proud that our Graduation Success Rate continues to rank amongst the best in the nation," said Utah Athletics Director Mark Harlan. "For us to achieve a 94 percent rate for the second consecutive year speaks to Utah's commitment of seeing our student-athletes achieve the upmost goal of receiving a college degree. I salute our coaches and academic staff for their unwavering commitment to this effort."

The reason for the difference between the NCAA GSR and federal graduation rate is that the former makes adjustments for circumstances such as church missions and transfers.

Utah's overall GSR ranked second in the Pac-12 Conference behind Stanford, which came in at 96 percent. The Utes had the best (or tied for the best) GSR in among its Pac-12 peers in nine conference-sponsored sports: baseball, men's basketball, football, men's tennis, gymnastics, soccer, women's swimming & diving, women's tennis and volleyball. In addition, 10 Utah programs achieved a perfect (100%) GSR score: baseball, men's basketball, men's ski, men's tennis, gymnastics, women's ski, soccer, women's swimming & diving, women's tennis, volleyball.

Of significant note, both the gymnastics and women's tennis teams have had perfect scores all 16 years since the GSR was introduced in 2005. It also marks the 11th consecutive year that men's tennis has earned a 100 percent score. Volleyball has scored 100 percent six consecutive years while men's basketball has reached that mark four years running. The Ute football program has eclipsed 90 percent over the last three years, showing the highest scores in the program's history of 95, 93 and 92 percent, respectively.

Eleven Utah teams, including baseball, men's basketball, football, men's skiing, men's tennis, gymnastics, women's skiing, soccer, women's swimming & diving, women's tennis and volleyball, either met or exceeded the overall NCAA Division I aggregate GSR score within its sport.
