MARICOPA, Ariz. – The Sun Devil men's golf team earned a victory in itself by starting the 2021 campaign, and it is a point behind Arizona following the first day of competition (Sunday) in The Copper Cup at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Course, 6.5-to-5.5.
 
Arizona State picked up two points in the fourball-style morning matchups, led by an impressive performance from sophomores Ryggs Johnston and David Puig. In singles play during the afternoon session, the Sun Devils were led by Blake Wagoner, Mason Andersen, and Jeewon Park. They secured 5.5 points to finish the day trailing 5.5-6.5.
 
SUNDAY MORNING SESSION RESULTS
Ryggs Johnston/David Puig (ASU)
 def. Sam Sommerhauser/Chase Sienkiewicz (Arizona)
The Sun Devil team of Ryggs Johnston and David Puig handled business from the start, defeating the Arizona pair in the first matchup of the day. The duo cruised to a 7&5 victory, winning seven of the 13 holes. After falling behind on the first hole, Puig and Johnston stormed back to win six of the next eight. Johnston sunk the clinching putt on 13, giving the Sun Devils the first point of The Copper Cup. 
 
Cameron Sisk/Mason Andersen (ASU) def. Trevor Werbylo/Chaz Aurilia (Arizona)
The most competitive match of the day featured clutch play by Cameron Sisk and Mason Andersen down the stretch. They battled Trevor Werbylo and Chaz Aurilia in a back-and-forth match, finding themselves trailing after 13 holes. Sisk and Andersen managed to make up the deficit, winning two of the final four holes to clinch the point 1UP. 
 
Brad Reeves/David Laskin (Arizona) def. Chun An Yu/Blake Wagoner (ASU) 
A tightly-contested matchup was not decided until the 17th hole, when Arizona's David Laskin and Brad Reeves claimed the point 2&1. Chun An Yu and Blake Wagoner won the fifth and tenth hole, but could not complete a comeback.
 
Briggs Duce/Christian Banke (Arizona) def. Gabe Salvanera/Jeewon Park (ASU)
Sophomore Gabe Salvanera and freshman Jeewon Park made their Sun Devil debuts, facing off with Briggs Duce and Christian Banke. Salvanera and Park managed to capture the eighth hole, but eventually fell 6&5 as the Wildcats evened the match at one.

AFTERNOON SESSION RESULTS
Sam Sommerhauser (Arizona) def. David Puig (ASU), 2&1
Puig fell behind by one after three holes and by two through 10 and fell 2 & 1.
 
Chaz Aurilia (UA) def. Ryggs Johnston (ASU), 1-UP
Johnston led by three through 13 but lost holes 14, 16, 17 and 18 to fall 1-up.
 
Mason Andersen (ASU) def. Trevor Werbylo (UA), 1-UP 
The comeback of the day in maroon and gold went to Chandler's Andersen as he trailed by one through 16 but won holes 17 and 18.
 
Chase Sienkiewicz (UA) def. Cameron Sisk (ASU), 1-UP 
Sisk led by two through eight but lost holes 9 and 10. He lost hole 12, won holes 13 and 15, but lost holes 16 and 18. 
 
Chun An Yu (ASU) and Brad Reeves (UA), halved
Yu was down 2 holes through 13 but won holes 14 and 16 to get the half point.

Blake Wagoner (ASU) def. David Laskin (UA), 4&3
Wagoner was down one through seven, tied it at the eighth hole and won No. 9, No. 12, No. 13 and No. 15 to win 4-up. 
 
Briggs Duce (UA) def. Gabe Salvanera (ASU), 6&5
Duce won five of the first nine holes and cruised to the 6&5 win.
 
Jeewon Park (ASU) def. Christian Banke (UA), 3&1
Park gave ASU a solid outing going up three through six, then again through nine, and never let it get below two.
 
UP NEXT
The Copper Cup continues Monday, with two more sessions to determine the winner of the inaugural event. The morning session features four foursome-style matches, where the best ball will be played in scramble form. The final sessions will determine everything regardless of what happens in the morning, with eight head-to-head single matches taking place in the afternoon.
