Washington field athletes, Colorado distance runners flex on day one of Pac-12 Track & Field Championships

Day 1 Results

Boulder, Colo. – The Washington men got off to a hot start in the field while Colorado dominated the women’s 10,000m events on day one of the 2024 Pac-12 Track & Field Championships in Boulder, Colo. 

Washington’s men’s squad earned an early team lead with 38 points through three events scored, aided by Chandler Ault’s Pac-12 championship record in the javelin, Prestin Artis’ win in the long jump, and a 14-point combined effort in the men’s 10,000m. The Colorado women compiled a leading 37 points through four events, including 25 combined points in the women’s 10,000m.

The Bruin women secured 27 points in the throwing events on day one, featuring a win in the javelin from Federica Botter and a 2-3 finish for Mayyi Mahama and Lyvante Su’emai in the hammer. On the men’s side, the Huskies picked up wins in the javelin and long jump from Chandler Ault and Prestin Artis, respectively.

Oregon’s Taylor Chocek is the leader in the heptathlon through four events at 3543 points, leading Colorado’s Avery McMullen (3534). Chocek earned second-place finishes in the 100m hurdles (13.58), high jump (1.70m, 5-07.00), and 200m (24.42). Washington’s Jami Schlueter is the leader in the decathlon with 4089 points, earning event victories in the 100m (10.87) and high jump (1.91m, 6-03.25).

Saturday’s competition opens at 10:30 a.m. PT / 11:30 a.m. MT with the decathlon 110m hurdles. Pac-12 Networks’ coverage of the meet kicks off with the men’s hammer at 12:30 p.m. PT / 1:30 p.m. MT. 

WOMEN’S JAVELIN – Federica Botter, UCLA (58.72m, 192-8)

UCLA’s Federica Botter repeated as Pac-12 women’s javelin champion with an impressive toss of 58.72m (192-8) on her first throw of the day. It’s the third-best mark in Pac-12 history in the event, as Botter becomes just the second woman in Pac-12 history to eclipse 58 meters at the Pac-12 Meet; Stanford’s Mackenzie Little owns the championship record at 59.13m (194-0) from 2019.

MEN’S JAVELIN – Chandler Ault, Washington (77.51m, 254-3)

Washington’s Chandler Ault secured the Pac-12 title in the men’s javelin, avenging his second-place showing at the 2023 Conference Meet. The senior picked up a PR with a Pac-12 championship record mark of 77.51m (254-3) on his first attempt, which held through the entire competition as Ault won by over five meters. USC’s Leif Nelson (72.03m, 236-4) and 2023 Pac-12 champion Jared O’Riley of Arizona (69.57m, 228-3) finished second and third overall, respectively.

WOMEN’S HAMMER – Shelby Moran, Oregon (68.80m, 222-5)

Oregon’s Shelby Moran repeated as women’s hammer champion with a toss of 68.80m (225-8) on her second attempt. Notably, she is the third-straight women’s hammer winner to repeat, as Cal’s Camryn Rogers (2019-22* 2020 canceled due to COVID-19) and Arizona State’s Maggie Ewen (2016-18) three-peated previously. Bruin throwers Mayyi Mahama (66.26m, 217-4) and Lyvante Su’emai (62.48m, 205-0) went 2-3 while Jill Stafford finished sixth at 59.93m (196-7) to combine for 17 points for UCLA. 

MEN’S LONG JUMP – Prestin Artis, Washington (7.78m, 26-05.25)

The Huskies picked up their second field event win of the day with Prestin Artis’ victory in the men’s long jump. The junior from Bellevue, Wash., notched a massive improvement on his fifth attempt, going 7.78m (25-06.25) to take the lead from USC’s JC Stevenson. Artis becomes just Washington man to win the league title in the long jump and first since Norris Frederick in 2006. 

WOMEN’S LONG JUMP – Alyssa Jones, Stanford (6.49m, 21-03.50)

Stanford’s Alyssa Jones became the third Pac-12 woman to repeat as event champion on day one, emerging victorious in the long jump for the second-straight year. Her 6.49m (21-0.50) effort on her fifth attempt earned her the win over USC’s Alyssa Hope (6.26m, 20-06.50). Notably, in 2023, Jones set the meet record with a mark of 6.74m (22-01.50), while her winning mark was a wind-aided effort of 6.79m (22-03.50).

WOMEN’S 10,000m – Bailey Hertenstein, Colorado (34:21.03)

Colorado’s Bailey Hertenstein pulled away from the field with seven laps to go and surged to the 10,000m victory, crossing with a time of 34:21.03. It’s the first Conference track title for Hertenstein, the 2022 Pac-12 Cross Country champion after transferring from Indiana. She’s the second Buff in three years to earn the win on the women’s side as Abby Nichols won in Eugene in 2022. Hertenstein, Samree Dishon (34:46.05), Abbey Nechanicky (35:06.81), and Katie Doucette (35:20.58) went 1-2-4-7 to combine for 25 points in the race. 

MEN’S 10,000m – Ky Robinson, Stanford (29:15.03)

Ky Robinson continued his dominance in Pac-12 Championship competition, as the 2023 league champion in cross country picked up the 10,000m to end competition on day one. Robinson breezed to the lead and never looked back, earning the win by over 25 seconds. Redshirt freshman Evan Jenkins from Washington was second overall at 29:40.61.
