Vollmer Posts NCAA Lead in Decathlon

TUCSON, Ariz. – In his first decathlon since the 2019 NCAA Championships, redshirt sophomore Max Vollmer posted an NCAA-leading score of 7,695 points to win the two-day, 10-event competition at the Jim Click Multis. Teammates Nathan Poff—with a near 700-point PR—and Dalen Hargett finished sixth and ninth, respectively.
 
Entering the day in second place overall, Vollmer pulled to within nine points of the lead with the help of a personal best of 42.60m/139-9 in the discus. He replaced his previous best of 41.01m/134-6 from last week's Hayward Premiere. Vollmer took over the lead with another all-time best, this time a 5.00m/16-4.75 clearance in the pole vault.
 
Vollmer extended his lead in the javelin, and with a national-qualifying score in sight, cruised through the 1,500 meters. His total of 7,695 takes over the early season NCAA lead, surpassing the previous top score of 7,536 points. At season's best the top 24 scores in the country will advance to the NCAA Championships (June 9-12) at Hayward Field.
 
Poff entered the weekend with a personal-best score of 6,126 points from his time at Lane CC. With the help of six PRs over the 10-event competition, Poff posted a final score of 6,807 points at the Jim Click meet. Three of the six all-time bests came Friday with his efforts in the discus, pole vault and javelin. In the final event, Poff was second in the 1,500 meters.
 
Hargett finished the meet with a score of 6,575 points, good for ninth place overall. In the javelin, the Newport, Ore., native posted a day's best of 54.64m/179-3 in his first attempt. The mark was good for third in the event and was his best in the event since the 2016 Big Sky Championships during his time at Montana State.

Next week, the Ducks will compete in the West Coast Classic, which will feature co-host duties for Oregon and Arizona. The meet will have a seven-team field that will split between the two locations: distance and throw events in Eugene, and sprint and jump events in Tucson. The West Coast Classic is set for Saturday, April 17.
