Soccer Completes Weekend Sweep with 2-1 Victory on Senior Day

Apr 11, 2021

SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah women's soccer team picked up its first weekend sweep of the season in Pac-12 action on Sunday when the Utes hung on for the 2-1 victory against Arizona on senior day.

The opening minutes of the first half belonged to the Wildcats, but only resulted in two shots and three corner kicks. Utah (4-8-3, 3-5-2 Pac-12) then had back-to-back looks in the 17'. The first shot came from Eden Jacobsen but her shot was blocked by Arizona's back line, which was then rebounded by Kaylee Coatney – who narrowly missed just left of the far post.

Taliana Kaufusi had a great look in the 20' but UA's Hope Hisey was there to deny the freshman. Courtney Talbot gave the Utes a 1-0 lead at the 25:26 mark when she booted the ball in with her left foot from the far side.

Right after the reset, Brooklyn James took the ball from her defender at midfield and made a brilliant pass to Kaufusi, who would not be denied this time, for a 1v1 against the keeper and pushed the lead to 2-0 just 25 seconds later for her first collegiate goal.

Arizona (8-5-1, 3-5-1 Pac-12) got off to a quick start in the second-half behind the foot of Jill Aguilera after her shot just slips past the hands of SJ Edwards in the 50'. The Wildcats continued to press the Utes and challenged both the backline and SJ Edwards in net.

After a couple fouls from Arizona in the 63', Kaylee Coatney found herself alone atop of the box and powered one right down the middle but Hisey was able to get there in time to make the stop. Minutes Later, Arizona went on the attack and took three shots – one of which came on goal that Edwards was able to deny.

Utah was able to re-possess the ball after getting called off sides in the 73' as Talbot found Brianna Pearson on the far side. The Corona, Calif., native, with space, sent a rocket towards the goal that was saved by Hisey once again. After an Arizona substitution, the Wildcats Jada Talley found herself deep into the box but Edwards was there for the save and keep Utah on top 2-1.

Arizona got one last shot off with 41 seconds remaining in the game, but it sailed over the net as Utah hung on for the 2-1 victory on senior day.
