A Dozen PRs, 9 Wins Highlight ASU’s Final Meet

May 2, 2021

TUCSON - Arizona State track and field picked up nine victories and recorded 10 new personal records Saturday in Tucson at Arizona's Desert Heat Classic. Eight Sun Devils and both ASU 4x1 relay squads moved into top-50 on the NCAA outdoor qualifying list with their performances. Long jumper Amanda Carty highlighted the day with a 6.39m PR that earned her a spot in the ASU top-10 all-time list.

Carty's best distance came on her final attempt and ultimately put her just seven inches behind event-winner Essence Thomas of Oklahoma and moved the recent transfer to 26th on the NCAA outdoor qualifying list. Fellow Sun Devil Ta'nalya Gordon finished right behind her at third, jumping exactly four inches shorter (6.29m/20-7.75) and also recording a personal-best.

Kentre Patterson continued to dominate in the 110H, this time shaving a hair of his time to finish first in 13.69, the 19th best time in the NCAA this season. He remains at fifth on the ASU all-time list.

Beatrice Llano made some noise Saturday in just the third meet of her outdoor season. Llano won the hammer throw with a 67.93m/222-10 hurl that wasn't close to her PR, but it was good enough to put her seventh in the NCAA. Shelby Moran's 64.65m/212-1 toss was good for third place and moved her to 24th on the outdoor season list.

The throwing core also celebrated a pair of wins from Turner Washington who for the first time this season didn't set a program record in Tucson but who did win both the discus and shot once again. Carlan Naisant came out on top in the men's javelin once again too, winning his fifth-consecutive meet in a row. He threw 71.54m weeks ago in Tucson to slide to fifth all-time at ASU.
