Naisant, Minard Both Earn Javelin Crowns at Pac-12 Championships

May 14, 2021

LOS ANGELES - Carlan Naisant and Alizee Minard both etched their names into the history books Friday on day one of the Pac-12 Championships in Los Angeles. Competing at Southern California's Katherine B. Loker Stadium, Naisant and Minard both earned the first conference javelin crowns in Arizona State history. Naisant went 69.04m/226-6 on his sixth throw, while Minard went 55.31m/181-5 on her second - her throw also breaking the stadium record(54.05m/177-4). ASU is tied for first in the women's scoring after day one with 18 points and sits in fifth in the men's standings (10).

Minard's throw was an almost seven foot improvement of her career best 53.22/174-7 from May 1 that sat second all-time at ASU. She remains in second, but is only a foot and five inches from taking the lead. Naisant's throw wasn't an improvement on his fifth all-time record from March 19 (71.54/234-8), but it was good enough to win the day by almost six feet.

Naisant and Minard's victories add two more marks to an already unbelievable year for ASU's throwing core that celebrated Turner Washington breaking the NCAA indoor shot record, claiming the NCAA indoor shot crown, and shattering the ASU outdoor discus title. The Sun Devils also celebrated Jorinde van Klinken earning NCAA bronze for the indoor shot on the women's side.

The Sun Devils also celebrated four qualifying times on the track, with Vincent Mauri (1500m), Austin Kratz (200m), Josephine Anokye (200m) and Jamar Marshall Jr. (400H) all moving on to the finals in their events. Mauri and Kratz both set new personal bests as well.

Saturday's field events start at 3:30 with the long jump, followed by the 110m hurdles at 4:00 p.m. Sunday gets going at 1:15 p.m. with the discus. The full meet schedule can be viewed here. Fans can watch day two's action at Pac-12.com.
