Men of Oregon Make It 14 in a Row

May 16, 2021

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Powered by its depth across the board, the Men of Oregon won the 2021 Pac-12 team title to extend the program's conference winning streak to 14 in a row. The Ducks finished the three-day competition with a meet-record 185 points, outdistancing the field by nearly 60. The UO women won two titles Sunday—five for the weekend—and racked up 151 points overall as the meet runner-up.

"That's a big number at a conference meet and what it shows is that we're a complete team," head coach Robert Johnson said. "We do a good job of scoring in a multitude of events. I'm super proud to see their work pay off and also excited to see them be able to continue the conference legacy of this program."

In a show of their depth across the board, the Men of Oregon scored double-digit points in 10 different events with 15 or more points in the 100 meters, 200 meters, 800 meters, 1500 meters, 5000 meters and 3000-meter steeplechase. The Ducks surpassed the previous team-best score of 180 set by USC in 1976. The program had a prior high of 175 from the 2017 Pac-12 meet in Eugene.

Cooper Teare became a two-time conference champion with his victory in the 1,500 meters. He led a 1-4-5 finish for the Ducks followed by James West and Reed Brown, respectively. Teare is now the seventh UO man to win the conference title at 1,500 meters and first since Sam Prakel in 2018. Teare posted a winning time of 3:39.81 in the race.

In their second races of the day, Cole Hocker and Teare were back on the track for a 1-2 finish in the 5,000 meters. Hocker pulled away over the final 200 meters to stop the clock in 13:32.68 and win his first Pac-12 title. He is the sixth Duck to win the event at the conference meet and makes it back-to-back for the program after Teare won it in 2019.

The Women of Oregon started the running events with a win in the 4x100-meter relay. The UO quartet of Jadyn Mays, Kemba Nelson, Jasmin Reed and Danyel White combined for a time of 42.87, a season best and the No. 5 mark in UO history. It was Oregon's first win in the event since 2017 and represented the fourth-fastest winning time in meet history.

Dominique Ruotolo continued the UO women's strong weekend in the horizontal jumps with her victory in the triple jump. She got out to a day's best of 13.66m/44-9.75 and was joined in a 1-4-5 Oregon finish along with Lexi Ellis and Jaimie Robinson, respectively. The trio grabbed 19 points for the Women of Oregon who were in a battle with USC for the team title.

"I'm even more proud of the women because they turned this into a meet," Johnson said. "Coming into the meet, they probably weren't within 50 points so to make it an 11-point meet is really outstanding on their part. I love their heart and I love their ability to compete when it matters."

The UO women scored in 18 of the 21 events contested at the Pac-12 Championships, including 10-or-more points in six events: 100 meters, 10,000 meters, 3000-meter steeplechase, 4x100-meter relay, long jump and triple jump.

Teare's 5K finish was one of seven runner-up performances for the UO men Sunday, a list that includes Micah Williams in the 100 meters, Jacoby McNamara in the 200 meters, Charlie Hunter in the 800 meters, Jonathan Harvey in the 400-meter hurdles, Emmanuel Ihemeje in the triple jump and the team of Harvey, McNamara, Rieker Daniel and Gaston Bouchereau in the 4x100-meter relay.

Led by Hunter in second, the 800 meters was another 19-point collection for the Men of Oregon. Hocker and Luis Peralta followed in third and fourth, respectively. Both Hunter (1:46.34) and Hocker (1:46.39) established outdoor personal bests in the race.

Harvey, in his third race of the day, dipped below 50 seconds in the 400-meter hurdles for the first time in his UO career. He crossed the line in 49.87, good for a runner-up showing and eight points. He had previously led off for the 4x100-meter relay and finished sixth in the 110-meter hurdles.

Along with the triple jump, the 100 meters was the highest-scoring event for the Women of Oregon at 19 points. The entire 4x100-meter relay team was in the field with Nelson posting a runner-up finish. She paced a 2-4-5-7 showing for the Ducks followed by Mays, White and Reed, respectively. Nelson and White went on to account for eight points in the 200 meters.

Champions from the prior two days were back to add points for the UO women. Alysah Hickey won the long jump on Saturday and returned on day three for a third-place finish in the high jump. In the 5,000 meters, the Ducks got nine points from 10K winner Carmela Cardama Baez and steeplechase champion Aneta Konieczek.
