May 19, 2021

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Pac-12 announced the recipients of their yearly Track & Field awards on Wednesday with both Johnnie Blockburger and Jordan Geist adding to their list of accolades.

After a historic first year at Arizona, Johnnie Blockburger has earned Pac-12 Men's Track & Field Freshman of the Year.

Blockburger opened up his first outdoor season at the Willie Williams Classic where he broke the Arizona freshman 400m record with a time of 45.83. He quickly went on to beat that PR at the Jim Click Shootout where he crossed the finish line in 44.71 to break the Arizona all-time 400m record. His time is currently ranked sixth in the NCAA. It is also the ninth-best all-time 400m U20 time in the world and fourth-best all-time in the U.S. Blockburger's 100m PR of 10.28 is the fourth-best in school history and his 200m PR of 20.70 ranks 10th.

At the Pac-12 Championships, Blockburger won the men's 400m title, clocking 45.57. He also competed as part of the 4x100 relay team (40.10) that placed third and the 4x400 relay team (3:08.75) that finished runner-up.

Jordan Geist picked up his third Pac-12 annual postseason award, earning Men's Field Athlete of the Year for the second time in his career. The first came during the 2019 season. Additionally, he was named Men's Freshman of the Year in 2018.

Geist has achieved major success throughout his career specializing in the shot put and discus throw, but he consistently added nationally ranked hammer throw marks to his performance list this season as well.

Geist won his third consecutive Pac-12 shot put title with a season-best mark of 20.35m (66-9.25), ranking him fifth in the NCAA. He also finished runner-up in the hammer throw, tossing a PR of 71.78m (235-6). His mark remains the second-best in school history and seventh in the NCAA.

Next up, Geist will compete in the shot put and hammer throw at the Tucson Elite Classic on May 20 and the shot put at the USATF Throws Festival on May 22. The pair will also travel to College Station, Texas for the NCAA West Region Preliminaries on May 27. A complete recap of the meets will be posted to ArizonaWildcats.com.
