Anokye Hits Olympic Mark, Minard and van Klinken Punch Tickets

May 27, 2021

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Ow she's fast! And did we mention that ASU = Throws U!?

Josephine Anokye ran a 22.76 (w 2.8) in the 200m dash on day two of the NCAA West Prelims in College Station, Texas, which would've hit the Olympic standard in legal wind. Alizee Minard and Jorinde van Klinken both punched their tickets to the national meet today too with qualifying marks in the javelin and shot put, respectively. Four Sun Devils have now officially punched their tickets to Eugene, and seven qualifying times were recorded thus far.

Beatrice Llano and Shelby Moran are both listed in qualifying position in the women's hammer, but due to a laser measurement-issue, flight one must compete again Friday morning at 11 a.m. CT which could affect Llano and Moran's status.

Minard kicked off the day for the Sun Devils with a third-place 54.09m/177-5 finish in the javelin. It was four feet shy of her PR but that doesn't matter as it was far enough enough to punch her ticket to Hayward Field. Event winner Akealy Moton of North Dakota State had a one foot, eight inch lead on Minard.

Van Klinken followed with a 17.67m/57-11.75 heave in the shot, earning her fourth and sending her to the national meet. It was an outdoor collegiate PR for van Klinken but several feet shy of her 18.06m/59-3 overall PR from the USATF Throwers Classic last week.

Anokye's near Olympic-qualifying mark came in the penultimate event of the night. The Ghanaian sprinter started the week right on the edge of hitting IAAF marks in the 100m, 200m and 400m. After scratching the 400m and finishing the 100m in 28th, she finally hit her goal when she crossed the 200m finish line in 22.76 (w2.8). The time moves her within arms-length of Charonde Williams 22.55 program record from 2009 and also secures her a spot in Saturday's finals.

ASU keeps the fun going Friday morning with the restart of the women's hammer before Ian Schulz and Turner Washington get going at 1:30 in the discus.
