Jun 4, 2021

TEMPE - The accolades just keep coming in for these two.

Turner Washington and Jorinde van Klinken both earned USTFCCCA West Region Field Athlete of the Year honors, the association announced today. Washington is just the second male ASU athlete to win the honor, joining Bryan McBride in 2015. Van Klinken is one of five female Sun Devils to bring home the field award, the most recent winner being Magdalyn Ewen who won back-to-back honors in 2017 and 2018.

Historical USTFCCCA Regional Winners

Washington has had a heck of a year. He followed his NCAA indoor shot put title with an outdoor season that saw him win every single shot put and discus event he competed in. He broke the ASU discus record three times, hit the Olympic standard in both events, picked up USTFCCCA Male Athlete of the Week honors three times, and currently leads the NCAA in both the shot and discus.

Van Klinken has turned heads all season too. In just her first semester, the Dutch thrower broke ASU's 38-year old women's discus record, improving it by 17 feet. Her 70.22m/230-4 mark was a monster PR that currently leads the entire world, she won the Pac-12 discus title, and she's a perfect 7-for-7 in discus competitions. Van Klinken also picked up Pac-12 Women's Field Athlete of the Year honors. Van Klinken is Olympic-bound thanks to her discus mark and will represent the Netherlands at Tokyo 2021.

The Sun Devils close out the season next week at the NCAA Championships June 9-12 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon. Eight individuals and the men's 4x100 relay squad will represent ASU in Oregon.
