Washington Claims Second NCAA Title in Eugene

Jun 11, 2021

EUGENE, Oregon - That's two for Washington!

Turner Washington claimed his second national title of the week Friday when he won the outdoor discus title at the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon. Washington won by almost five feet, recording a 63.42m/208-1 mark in the first round. He joins Sun Devil great and former Olympian Ryan Whiting '09 as the only Sun Devils to win the indoor shot, outdoor shot, and discus all in the same seasons. With the win, Washington brings ASU it's second national discus title on the men's side and seventh overall, the last being Magdalyn Ewen in 2018.

Arizona State's men's team finished ninth overall in the country with 24 points, marking the first time the Maroon and Gold have been top-10 since 2010. The women's squad currently sits sixth with 12 points. A top-10 finish for them would be the third time in the past four years ASU's women have been in that position, and the highest they've finished since 2009.

The Sun Devils also celebrated freshman hurdling phenom Jamar Marshall Jr. taking fifth overall in the 110m hurdles. Marshall finished in 13.53, 0.28 seconds off winner Robert Dunning of Alabama. The finish completes the first-year Sun Devils' record-breaking freshman campaign that featured him taking the Pac-12 110H crown, breaking the ASU 60m indoor and 110H titles, and slotting his name into sixth all-time in the outdoor 400m hurdles.

Ian Schulz threw in the discus Friday too. Schulz finished 10th overall after going 56.25m/184-6. He earned second-team All-America honors with the finish.

ASU closes out the national meet Saturday at 2:35 when world-leader Jorinde van Klinken competes in the discus. Her competition will stream on ESPN3.
