Gruver Places Fourth In Trials Final

Jun 26, 2021

EUGENE, Ore. - Husky All-American and 2020 grad Olivia Gruver placed fourth today in the final of the women's pole vault at the Olympic Trials at Hayward Field, just one spot shy of making Team USA.

Gruver, competing in her first Olympic Trials, was one of five women remaining with the bar going to 15-feet, 5-inches. Gruver was close but couldn't quite avoid the bar on her three tries, brushing it slightly on her way up a couple of times. That was the bar that she needed, as only two women would clear 15-5. Gruver lost the tiebreak for third-place with U.S. record-holder Sandi Morris, only because Gruver had one earlier miss in the competition, at the opening height, and Morris was clean until missing all three at 15-5.

The last athlete with UW ties to compete at the Trials will be volunteer assistant coach Sam Prakel, in the finals of the 1,500-meters, tomorrow at 4:40 p.m.
