Late Goal Goes Against Washington In 2-1 Loss

Sep 5, 2021

ALBUQUERQUE – The Washington women's soccer team lost 2-1 in a heartbreaker to New Mexico on Sunday afternoon. The Lobos scored goals in the 81st and 89th minutes to claim the victory. With the loss, UW drops on 1-4 on the season.

Katie O'Kane gave UW a one goal advantage in the 51st minute with a beautiful shot from midfield after the Lobo goalkeeper had given the ball away. O'Kane's goal was the first of her career.

The Huskies were in control for the better part of the game, with 16 shots in total and nine on frame. Unfortunately for Washington, the lone goal by O'Kane was not enough to hold off New Mexico.

UNM was able to take advantage of their limited opportunities at goal, scoring twice on only three shots on target. Jadyn Edwards tied the match up in the 81st and then Zaria Katesigwa was able to slip past the UW defenders off a long ball and finish it for the winner in the 89th minute.

Summer Yates had three shots in the game including a great strike in the first half that the New Mexico goalkeeper saved over the bar. Ameera Hussen, Ruby Hellstrom, Mary Johnston, Karlee Stueckle and Vanessa Millsaps each had two shot attempts on the day.

Washington returns home next Saturday to face Long Beach State at 4:00 p.m. at Husky Soccer Stadium.
