Nov 5, 2021

SALT LAKE CITY – Playing their final match of the season, the Utah women's soccer team played Colorado to a 1-1 double-overtime draw on Senior Day at Ute Field on Friday afternoon.

Utah (6-10-4, 1-7-3 Pac-12) honored its eight members of its senior class before the match. Kylee Geis scored for the Utes in the game. This was her first career goal. Taliana Kaufusi picked up the assist on the goal. Utah tallied ten shots in the match against Colorado (8-7-4, 3-4-4 Pac-12) and held possession for 53 percent of the game.

"I am thankful to have my first season here with such a wonderful group of seniors," remarked head coach Hideki Nakada. "I appreciate all the hard work they put in throughout the season, but I appreciate them the most because of the people that they are. They helped us to set a standard moving forward, and I am committed to building a program that they can be proud of."

After both teams came out trading possession back and forth, Utah had the first chance to score in the match. Utah was moving down the field, and Taliana Kaufusi had the ball outside the box. She sent a cross into the box and found Kylee Geis for a header. Geis beat the Colorado goalkeeper for the first goal of the match. This was Geis' first career goal.

After the goal, the teams battled for possession, and the Utes got the second shot of the match when Anna Escobedo had a shot go wide of goal.

Following the Ute's second shot attempt, Colorado got their first in the 37' minute of the match. Shyra James had a shot that went high of goal. Thirty seconds later, the Buffs had their first goal of the game. Phoenix Miranda headed the ball to James, and she scored, tying the match at 1-1, which would be the score taken into halftime.

Coming out of halftime, Colorado came out with the first three shots of the half, but Chelsea Peterson was up to the task as she stopped everything in her direction. She tallied saves on attempts by James and Kayleigh Webb. Webb and James tried to score late in the match, but Peterson again tallied the saves.

Courtney Talbot had an opportunity to score. After she controlled a loose ball, she fired a shot to the right side of the goal, but Dani Hansen tallied the save. Late in regulation, Avery Brady had a blast, but Hansen made the save, and we went to overtime.

The Buffs had a quality scoring chance in the first overtime as Webb took a shot from just outside the box and tried to go to the upper right corner, but she went off the crossbar, and Utah cleared. The Utes had one scoring shot late in the second overtime, but Hansen saved Olsen's shot, and the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
