Sun Devil Soccer’s van Deursen and Carleer earn CoSIDA Academic All-District® honors

Nov 11, 2021

TEMPE, Ariz. – Sun Devil soccer players Lieske Carleer and Eva van Deursen were both named to the 2021 Academic All-District® Women's Soccer Team, as announced by CoSIDA on Thursday.

The Academic All-District® Women's Soccer Team, selected by CoSIDA, recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. The CoSIDA Academic All-America® program separately recognizes soccer honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA.

As first-team Academic All-District® honorees, Carleer (4.00 GPA/Kinesiology) and van Deursen (4.00 GPA/Kinesiology) advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® ballot. First-, second- and third-team Academic All-America® honorees will be announced in early December.

A senior midfielder from Veldhoven, Netherlands, van Deursen started all 18 games she played for the Sun Devils in 2021. She finished third on the team in scoring with 16 points and set the single-season school record for assists with 10. On Sept. 19, van Deursen helped the Dutch U23 National Team claim a 3-0 win over Sweden.

The anchor of ASU's defense from Winterswijk, Netherlands, Carleer started in 17 of the 18 games she played in. On August 30, Carleer was named the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week after contributing to a pair of defensive performances in which the Sun Devils allowed only 13 shots in ASU's wins at Mississippi State and at UAB. Carleer helped ASU get off to a good start in the 5-1 win at UAB after the junior defender scored her first goal of the season in the 13th minute to give ASU an early 1-0 advantage.
