UNC Tops UW In Finale Of Goombay Splash

BIMINI, Bahamas – North Carolina beat Washington, 58-37, Saturday at Gateway Christian Academy to claim the Goombay Splash tournament title on Bimini Island in the Bahamas.
 
Eva Hodgson scored 15 points off the bench for the Tar Heels (6-0) to lead all scorers.
 
Nine different Huskies (2-3) scored, led by Alexis Griggsby's eight points. Missy Peterson had five points, and Nancy Mulkey chipped in four points, six rebounds and four blocks.
 
T.T. Watkins and Nia Lowery each scored four points off the bench.
 
UNC held the Huskies to 13 first-half points to jump out to a 19-point lead, 32-13, at the break. The Huskies started hot in the second half, going on an 8-0 run to cut the Tar Heels' lead to 11 points.
 
UW's leading scorer Haley Van Dyke scored four points during the Huskies' run and finished with six points and five rebounds.
 
Washington outscored UNC 14-12 in the final quarter. Griggsby went on a 5-0 run to lead a spirited surge, but the Tar Heels were ultimately able to hold on.
 
The Huskies are off until Dec. 10 when they will play cross-town rival Seattle U.
