Women’s Tennis Releases Schedule for 2022

Dec 9, 2021

TEMPE, Ariz. – The turning of the calendar into the new year always hints that the tennis season is not far behind, and Sheila McInerney's squad is inching toward 2022.

The Sun Devil Women's Tennis team has officially released their regular season schedule, which sees five consecutive home matches to begin the 2022 campaign.

"Super excited to start the season with five home matches to get the juices flowing," McInerney said. "Once again we have a very challenging schedule which is always something we pride ourselves in playing. In addition to our strong Pac-12 Conference competition we have matches scheduled against numerous top 20 teams which is very motivating for both our players and coaching staff."

The Sun Devils will run into some of the nation's top talent all spring, both in and out of the conference. They'll pay a visit to the USC Trojans, who boast four singles players in the ITA's Top 125 Rankings, in mid-March. The ITA named USC's Eryn Cayetano the nation's top singles player.

In April, they'll host the Stanford Cardinal, who have three players in the top-40 singles rankings.

Of the 23 matches listed, the Sun Devils will be home for 15 of them. They'll face tough road tests this year, when they pay visits to Oklahoma, USC, and UCLA.

The Sun Devil roster mirrors much of what it did last season, returning seven players with the addition of just one freshman, Patricija Spaka. Spaka was named to the ITA's preseason list of top newcomers and impressed during the fall season.

"Our players continued to improve throughout the fall season and they are looking forward to a challenging and successful spring campaign," McInerney said.

The Sun Devils will put a bow on their 2022 season when they host in-state rival Arizona on April 16, a series in which they've dominated the Wildcats since 2000, winning 15 of their 17 meetings.
