Big Performance by Jones

Jan 28, 2022

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Allie Jones set personal records in her first two events to propel the Stanford track and field All-American to her best score in the five-event pentathlon on Friday at the Razorback Invitational.

Jones scored 3,996 points, a huge improvement from her previous best of 3,618 from 2019 -- the last time she competed indoors -- to place sixth among a strong field at the Tyson Indoor Track Center. Jones moved up from No. 4 to No. 2 on Stanford's all-time indoor list, only 67 points off school-record holder Whitney Liehr's 4,063 from 2009.

In the first event, Jones recorded 8.48 in the 60-meter hurdles, a big improvement from her previous best of 8.72, moving her up from No. 10 to No. 4 in school indoor history.

Another PB followed, this time in the high jump. Jones cleared 5-7 ¼ (1.71m) on her third try, moving into the No. 10 spot all-time at Stanford indoors. Her previous best was 5-6 ½ (1.69m). Jones took 13 jumps in the competition, opening at 5-1 ¼ (1.56m) and needing three tries at 5-5 (1.65m).

Through three events, including the shot put, Jones was in fourth place. Though she struggled in the long jump, usually one of her best events, Jones finished by winning the 800 in a time of 2:19.58.

Stanford's Max Manson won pole vault. The top three, including teammate Garrett Brown and Arkansas' Rhett Nelson, each reached the height of 16-10 ¾ (5.15m). Nelson had one more attempt and Brown had an additional miss. It was collegiate best for Brown, who moved to No. 4 on Stanford's all-time freshmen list and No. 10 overall at Stanford indoors.

In the men's weight throw, Max McKhann (66-0 ½, 20.13m) and Anthony Argyropoulos (59-0 ¾, 18.00m) each record personal bests. McKhann placed sixth in the competition and strengthened his hold on the No. 5 mark on the all-time list.

The meet continues on Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m. PT for the Cardinal.
