Mitchell Shatters OSU Record in 3000m on Last Day of UW Invitational

Jan 29, 2022

SEATTLE, Wash. – Oregon State redshirt junior Kaylee Mitchell shattered the OSU program record in the 3000 meters as the Beavers closed out competition at the UW Invitational in Seattle, Wash. on Saturday. The Beavers totaled 18 top-10 finishes on the weekend.

Mitchell broke the OSU record with a time of 9:03.26 in the 3000 meters for a new personal-best and third-place finish. The previous record was 9:23.36, set by Juliana Mount in 2019. Fellow redshirt junior Grace Fetherstonhaugh remains second in the OSU records in the 3000 meters after recording her own personal-best of 9:06.86 to place seventh overall.

"We are building great momentum with this team," said head coach Louie Quintana. "We had huge races by our 3K group. Kaylee clocking 9:03 and Grace with 9:06 is amazing stuff. It was a great work weekend for the team and we are really focused for next week in Spokane."

The Beavers finished fourth in the 4x400-meter relay, with a team of sophomore Adeal Scatena, senior Mari Friedman, and freshmen Jada Hurley and Sydney van der Zee clocking a time of 3:58.23.

In the long jump, sophomore Delaney Bahn landed fifth with a leap of 5.54m (18' 2.25"). Redshirt senior Keely McLaughlin also notched a fifth-place finish, recording a toss of 13.84m (45' 5") in the shot put.

During the first day of competition, freshman Lara Denbow and senior Emma Nelson went 1-2 in the high jump, with personal-best marks of 1.73m (5' 8"). In the weight throw, redshirt freshman Jade Whitfield finished sixth in the weight throw, posting a personal-best mark of 16.21m (53' 2.25") to surpass her previous PR of 13.26m (43' 6"). Whitfield's toss moved her to fourth in the Oregon State record book in the weight throw.

On the track, Scatena finished second in the 60-meter hurdles final with a personal-best of 8.83. She had advanced to the final after placing third in the preliminary race with a time of 9.05. The Beavers also posted a sixth-place finish in the distance medley relay with a time of 11:38.06.
