Feb 11, 2022
Sydney Johnson notched a career-best mark of 1.73m (5-08.00) in the high jump.

UCLA Track & Field finished up day one of competition at the Don Kirby Invitational (Albuquerque, N.M) and Husky Classic (Seattle, Wash.), adding top 10 program marks and impressive performances at both meets.

Freshman Lyvante Su'emai put up a strong showing in the women's weight throw in Albuquerque, finishing sixth overall with a mark of 18.05m (59-02.75), tied for the ninth-best mark in program history. Su'emai has progressed from marks of 14.37m (47-01.75) and 15.28m (50-01.75) set earlier this season.

Fellow first-year Sydney Johnson notched a career-best mark of 1.73m (5-08.00) in the high jump to finish sixth overall. Johnson eclipsed her previous mark of 1.64m (5-04.50) by over three inches on Friday evening.

Catherine Leger and Makenzy Pierre-Webster continued their hot start to the 2022 indoor season, as the pair finished 5-6 in the women's 200m competition and each recorded times of 23.34. Leger is now just one one-hundredth of a second behind Pierre-Webster on UCLA's all-time indoor 200m list.

Ronan McMahon-Staggs entered the UCLA record books with his 5000m performance in Seattle, as the sophomore ran 14:01.19 for the eighth-fastest indoor time in program history. The Long Beach, Calif., native already ranks 10th on UCLA's all-time list in the indoor 3000m (8:09.89), a performance he secured earlier this season at the UW Invitational.

The men's 3000m saw Jake Parker win his heat with a time of 8:08.00, good for ninth place overall in the competition. Emma Tavella was 32nd overall in the women's competition, clocking a lifetime-best time of 9:37.43.

The Bruins are back in action for the conclusion of the Husky Classic and Don Kirby Invite on Saturday. The first flights of the women's pole vault open competition in Albuquerque at 7:30 a.m. PT and the first distance event in Seattle is set to be the women's mile at 12:40 p.m. PT.
