Fetherstonhaugh Breaks Oregon State 3000m Record as Beavers Close First Day at Husky Classic and Don Kirby Elite Invitational

Feb 11, 2022

SEATTLE, Wash. / ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Redshirt junior Grace Fetherstonhaugh broke the Oregon State 3000-meter record to open competition at the Husky Classic in Seattle, Wash. on Friday. The Oregon State track and field team tallied six top-10 finishes as it closed out the first day of action at the Husky Classic in Seattle, Wash. and the Don Kirby Elite Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M.

Husky Classic | Seattle, Wash.
"We had a productive day in Seattle," said head coach Louie Quintana. "Starting in the weight throw, all the women were awesome. Redshirt senior Keely McLaughlin, redshirt freshman Markayla Billings, and redshirt sophomore Caitlyn Marx had solid days. Redshirt freshman Jade Whitfield had a fantastic effort throwing a huge PR and making the finals in a very good weight field. We capped the day with some fireworks in the 3000 meters with Grace running 9:01 and breaking redshirt junior Kaylee Mitchell's two-week-old school record. Kaylee ran valiantly to run 9:11, but just didn't have quite the gas over the last 800 to close it out. I was still proud of the effort. Grace ran steady, was off the pace and just steamrolled the last K. They've run 9:01 and 9:03 this year, which is just insane, and those times are most likely bubble times for the national meet. The distance depth in the NCAA is at an all-time high. I'm glad that we can play and am proud of all the efforts. We had eight others battle in the earlier sections of the 3Ks. We had so much fun watching them get after it."

Fetherstonhaugh led the Beavers in the 3000 meters, stopping the clock with a personal-best of 9:01.74 to place fourth overall. Her time surpassed the previous school record of 9:03.26, set by Mitchell on Jan. 28, also in Seattle, Wash. Mitchell finished Friday's race 10th overall with a time of 9:11.09.

In the weight throw, Whitfield moved to second in the Oregon State all-time list for her personal-best mark of 16.92m (55' 6.25). Whitfield finished eighth overall in the event.

Don Kirby Elite Invitational | Albuquerque, N.M.
In the women's high jump, senior Emma Nelson cleared 1.78m (5' 10") for a personal-best and third-place finish. Nelson's clearance places her at sixth in the OSU all-time list. Freshman Lara Denbow finished tenth overall with a mark of J1.73m (5' 8"), which matches her personal-best, previously set on Jan. 28 in Seattle, Wash. Sophomore Delaney Bahn posted a personal-best leap of 5.85m (19' 2.50') in the long jump to finish 14th overall and move up to fourth in the OSU all-time records.

On the track, freshman Jada Hurley posted a personal-best of 25.09 in the unseeded 200 meters, landing in a tie for 16th overall. Hurley's time also is fourth in the Oregon State record book in the event.
