No. 31 Cal Routs Army 7-0

BERKELEY – Carl Emil Overbeck posted the first clinching win of his career in the 31st-ranked California men's tennis team's 7-0 rout of Army West Point on Saturday at the Hellman Tennis Complex, with the Cal freshman beating Samuel Eden, 6-3, 6-1, in singles.
 
The Golden Bears – who did not lose a set to the Black Knights – improved their record to 4-3. Army is now 9-4.
 
The Bears rebounded in a big way from their last match – a 4-0 defeat at eighth-ranked Stanford on Feb. 12.
 
"We spent a couple of weeks preparing and working on our deficiencies, and I was very happy with our focus before the match and throughout the match," said Kris Kwinta, Cal's Peter Wright Director of Men's Tennis. "To see the guys implement what we worked on throughout the match and keep up the intensity and focus all throughout was important for me to see. I'm proud of them for that and for the level they brought today."
 
The 12th-ranked doubles pair of Overbeck and senior Yuta Kikuchi posted the first win of the day, as the Bears defeated Thomas Lake and A.J. Woodman, 6-2, on court one. Cal freshmen Derrick Chen and Mikey Wright clinched the doubles point when they bested Nathan Jose and Jake Huarte, 7-5, on court three.
 
Kikuchi quickly doubled Cal's lead in singles when he blanked Diego Huttepain, 6-0, 6-0, on court one. Sean Hill added a 6-4, 6-0 win over Woodman on court two to give Cal a 3-0 lead, before Overbeck prevailed on court three to secure the victory.
 
The teams completed the remaining matches, with Cal winning all three to finish with the 7-0 result.
 
Cal next hosts UNLV on Monday at 1:30 p.m. at the Hellman Tennis Complex.
