Men’s Rowing Begins Spring With Busy Weekend

Mar 4, 2022

BERKELEY – The Cal men's rowing program officially begins its 2022 spring season on Saturday when the Bears will send crews to the Las Vegas Invitational and the California Cup Challenge in Newport Beach.

The Bears' top boats will head to Las Vegas to compete in the Las Vegas Invitational. A freshman boat and a varsity-4 boat will race at the California Cup Challenge

"We are excited to have this on the calendar and have something for the guys to focus on," said head coach Scott Frandsen. "The lineups are starting to come together and the guys are excited to get a series of races down the course, excited to get back to it this weekend."

This is Cal's first race since the Bears took second at the IRA National Championships last May.

"Guys are grateful to be racing it has been a productive winter of training, this is why we've trained so hard to get on the racecourse and show our speed and our power. It's very early season, the bulk of our main races are much later but this is good for early prep for a weekend of racing," said Frandsen.

The California Cup Challenge race will be a series of shorter races. "Good experience for the younger guys and good to get that lactic acid burn for everybody," said Frandsen.
