Mar 15, 2022

BOULDER—Colorado soccer returned to action over the weekend, playing its first two spring matches at the Lower Rec Fields on Sunday. The Buffaloes hosted BC United Women, a WPSL team, and UCCS.

The Buffs split the day, playing its first matches since the end of the 2021 season in November. CU and BC United played to a 2-2 draw after three 25-minute periods and closed the night with a 4-0 win under the lights against the Mountain Lions.

"It was great to get out and play two competitive matches," head coach Danny Sanchez commented. "We played very well in stretches and we learned a lot about ourselves as we build towards the second half of our spring season. We are looking forward to four very challenging weekends in April after spring break."

Colorado got goals from Shyra James and Ellen Jones to open a 2-0 lead against BC United. CU Hall of Famer Nikki (Marshall) Malone helped lead BC United's comeback effort, assisting on its first goal.

The Buffs returned after an hour break to host UCCS in a full 90-minute contest. Kayleigh Webb got the scoring started for CU, notching the eventual game-winner. Jenny Beyer, seeing her first action in almost a year, and James then teamed up for the next two goals with Beyer twice assisting CU's top goal-scorer from a year ago.

James closed the night with her third goal of the match and fourth of the day.

Bella Grust manned the net for both games.

Colorado will return to Prentup Field for its next match on April 2 against 2021 national runner-up BYU (Noon MT).
