Arizona Comes From Behind Again to Clinch Series Win Over No. 12 Stanford

Mar 20, 2022

TUCSON, Ariz. — The comeback Cats were at it again on Sunday afternoon, scoring five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to secure a 6-5 victory for the Arizona Wildcats (15-4, 4-1) over the visiting Stanford Cardinal (9-7, 1-4).

Starting pitcher Garrett Irvin was spectacular for the Wildcats, going 6.0 innings and allowing just two earned runs (three total) on five hits while striking out six. The southpaw did not factor into the decision.

Stanford and Arizona combined to score three runs in the opening frame before both starters settled in. The Cats and Cardinal cruised through the middle innings, with the visitors still holding a 2-1 edge going into the seventh.

The Cardinal plated an unearned run in the seventh to extend their lead and picked up more insurance on a pair of solo home runs in the eighth, giving them a four-run lead late in the game.

Arizona went to work mounting their rally in the eighth, beginning with a pair of infield singles from Daniel Susac and Tanner O'Tremba. Left fielder Chase Davis followed their spark with a laser three-run home run to left center that pulled the Wildcats back within one run.

Tommy Splaine and Mac Bingham kept the rally alive with a pair of walks that put a runner in scoring position for Tyler Casagrande, who roped the game-tying single into right field. After Stanford's fourth pitching change of the inning, Garen Caulfield deftly pushed a sac fly into center field, scoring the go-ahead run.

Arizona closer Holden Christian (2-1), who also recorded the final out in the top of the eighth, slammed the door on the Cardinal with a 1-2-3 ninth inning to seal the victory and earn his second win of the year.
