No. 10 Cal Falls In Super Regional At No. 7 Georgia

May 10, 2024
Jessica Alsola won in singles in Cal's loss in Athens.

ATHENS, Ga. – The season came to an end for the No. 10 California women's tennis team in a 4-2 loss at No. 7 Georgia in the NCAA Super Regionals on Friday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. The match ended when the 49th-ranked Katja Wiersholm fell to the Bulldogs' 65th-ranked Mell Reasco 7-5, 6-4.

Jessica Alsola beat Anastasiia Lopata 6-1, 7-5 and Berta Passola Folch won 2-6, 6-2, 6-0 over Mai Nirundorn for the Golden Bears

Cal closed the season with a 20-7 record while Georgia improved to 23-4. The Bulldogs advance to next week's NCAA quarterfinals.

"We competed really hard today against a Georgia team that's also had a good season," Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. "The doubles point was important. We were very, very close to getting it. As we usually do we fought back in singles and were still fighting when the match ended. If we had been out there longer, I have full confidence that this team could've pulled it out."

The teams split the first two doubles matches. First, the Bears' 18th-ranked duo of Viller Moeller and Mushika dropped a 6-2 result to the 55th-ranked Nirundorn and Guillermina Grant on court one. Wiersholm and Berta Passola Folch followed with a 6-3 win over Georgia's Lopata and Reasco on court three. Court one decided the point, with the 51st-ranked Alsola and Ivanov narrowly losing 7-6(5) to the 14th-ranked Mert Ayesegul and Dasha Vidmanova to put the Bulldogs ahead 1-0.

Cal's deficit swelled to 3-0 with singles losses on courts one and five – before Alsola notched her victory on court four and Passola Folch won on court six to make the score 3-2.

Over on court two, the 44th-ranked Viller Moeller was locked in a tight battle with the 41st-ranked Alexandra Vecic. The Bulldog won the first set 6-2 and the players were in a second-set tiebreaker that itself was tied 6-6 when Wiersholm lost to Reasco to wrap up the match.

Despite the conclusion of the team portion of the season for Cal, four Bears – Ivanov, Mushika, Viller Moeller and Wiersholm – will compete in the NCAA individual tournaments from May 20-25 in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Viller Moeller, Wiersholm and Ivanov will play in the NCAA Singles Championship, and Mushika and Viller Moeller will compete in the NCAA Doubles Championship.

"We've had a fantastic year – I think we'll finish in the top 10 in the country when the final rankings come out – and we still have four players competing in the individual championships," Augustus said. "The fact that we have three singles players and a doubles team in the postseason says a lot about the year we've had. Valentina and Hannah, both seniors, will play in those tournaments, so it's great that their college careers don't end today.

"This team was wonderful on and off the court and in the classroom. I'm just really proud of the season this team's had."
