Dawgs Pull Away From Northern Arizona, 6-1

Mar 24, 2022

LAS VEGAS – Washington's winning road ways continued today with a 6-1 victory over a strong Northern Arizona squad in a match held at UNLV's Fertitta Tennis Complex. The Huskies improved to 13-4 with the win and now head into the meat of Pac-12 play starting Sunday at Utah.

The Lumberjacks have been ranked in the top-75 this season but the Huskies were on point today, taking doubles and then posting three straight set singles wins from Han-Chih Lin, Jack Davis, and Cesar Bouchelaghem, for the clinch. UW would go on to add a pair of third set wins from Ewen Lumsden and Rikuto Yamaguchi for the final margin.

"A solid match and good preparation, and we're excited to be back into the Pac-12 schedule this Sunday at Utah," said Head Coach Matt Anger.

Davis moved up to the No. 1 singles spot today as Clement Chidekh was rested, and he posted a key 6-2, 6-4 win over Facundo Tumosa. The senior is now 11-3 in dual singles play and has won five in a row.

"Jack has been very solid. He and Brandon have been more consistent at first doubles and Jack has been taking that into singles on this road stretch."

Lin got the first singles win, 6-3, 6-0, over Dominik Buzonics, at No. 3 singles. Bouchelaghem clinched the match today with a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 4 over Maciej Ziomber.

Ewen Lumsden won a 4-6, 7-6, (10-5) three setter at No. 2 singles over Eban Straker-Meads to make it 5-0 Dawgs, and then Rikuto Yamaguchi completed a comeback win at six. He beat Dani Torres, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2. Northern Arizona pulled out a win at five, where Alex Groves outlasted Nedim Suko, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.

In doubles, the Huskies welcomed a new face with a win, as freshman Dzianis Zharyn, a recent addition all the way from Belarus, played No. 3 doubles with Suko and earned a 6-4 win over Dillon/Ziomber. Davis and Wong also had a 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles as the Huskies took the early 1-0 lead.

"Dzianis has been working hard to get into the UW and was finally admitted for the spring so it was exciting for him to get out there and get his first taste of college tennis," said Anger.

Washington now heads to Salt Lake City on Sunday for its second Pac-12 match of the year, to face 35th-ranked Utah at 11 a.m.
