Stanford's Fastest Man

Apr 2, 2022

STANFORD, Calif. – In his collegiate 100-meter debut, freshman Udodi Onwuzurike shattered meet and Stanford records at the Stanford Invitational on Friday – twice.

Onwuzurike completed his day with a 10.07, the second-fastest time in NCAA Division I and the sixth-fastest time in the world this year.

Until Friday, the Stanford record and freshman record was 10.39 by Wopamo Osaisai in 2005. But Onwuzurike, the reigning world under-20 200 champion, took that down easily in his first collegiate 100 race, running 10.14 in the prelims at 1 p.m. At 2:20 p.m., Owuzurike ran even faster. Japan's Yuki Koike was second in 10.31, with the wind reading at a legal 0.6 meters per second.

The Stanford Invitational record of 10.18 had stood since 2000, when established by Washington's Ja'Warren Hooker.

Dorien Simon was seventh in 10.59. His 10.50 in the prelims places him at No. 8 at Stanford all-time.

Onwuzurike's was among three meet records to fall. Also broken were the facility record in the women's hammer throw, the national high school girls' 5,000 record, and the NCAA Division III women's 10,000 record. Also, the 10 fastest times in the men's 5,000 in NCAA Division I this year all were run in the same race at Cobb Track and Angell Field Friday night, with Ky Robinson leading a 1-2-3 Stanford finish.

Robinson, a sophomore from Australia, was two weeks removed from a runner-up 5,000 finish at the NCAA Indoor Championships. He made his season outdoor debut with a 13:23.61, with Charles Hicks in 13:24.58 – both under the meet record of 13:25.63 held by Northern Arizona's David McNeill, also an Australian, since 2010. Cole Sprout was third in 13:27.02. Now, they rank Nos. 4, 5, and 8 on Stanford's all-time outdoor list.

Robinson, Hicks, and Sprout worked together, with only Alabama's Amon Kemboi and Colorado's Andrew Kent joining them to fill out a five-runner lead pack. With three laps to go, Kemboi crept up to leader Robinson's shoulder. But it was Sprout who bolted into the lead just before the gun with Kent in tow.

In a wild final lap, Robinson and Hicks swung around Kent on the curve and then passed Sprout on the backstretch. Hicks made a bid for the lead as they reached the homestretch, but Robinson was too strong and pulled away.

In the women's javelin, Stanford's Virginia Miller was sixth at the U.S. Olympic Trials last year, but never did she throw farther than on Friday, when she won in 181-3 (55.26m). Miller, making her season debut, hit her big throw on her sixth and final attempt, earning an six-foot improvement from her second-best in the competition. The distance strengthened her hold on the No. 4 spot of Stanford's top-10 list.

Laurel Wong had her finest day as a collegian, clearing a lifetime best 13-7 ¼ (4.15m) to win the women's pole vault.

In the women's hammer, Cal's Camyron Rogers, who already held the meet record, broke the facility record on her second throw, a distance of 243-4 (74.18m). It exceeded Gwen Berry's 239-0 (72.84m) from the 2017 TrackTown Summer Series event.

In the women's 5,000 invitational race, Natalie Cook of Flower Mound (Texas), placed third in 15:25.93, shattering the two-year-old national high school record of 15:34.47 from Jenna Hutchins of Science Hill High in Johnson City, Tennessee. And in the women's 10,000, Kassie Parker of Loras ran 33:03.61, to place fourth in the invitational and break the Division III record.

Stanford athletes set 26 personal bests, including a 193-0 (58.84m) hammer throw by Jordan Fong for fourth place among women.

The meet reconvenes on Saturday at 9 a.m. for the high school boys discus.
