Bears Depth On Display

Apr 10, 2022
The Bears had another solid day on the water, winning at both the Pac-12 Challenge and Ebright Invitational.

REDWOOD CITY, CA – The Cal men's rowing team displayed its incredible depth with another impressive day on the water. The Bears swept all their races over two events in the Bay Area on Sunday starting with an impressive showing by the top three boats at the Pac-12 Challenge at Redwood Shores. Not to be outdone, Cal's three crews at the Oakland Estuary earned wins at the Ebright Invitational.

"Great weekend of racing for all of our crews at the Pac-12 Challenge and Ebright Invitational," said head coach Scott Frandsen. "We executed the race plans and got the performances we wanted for April 9 and 10. We can definitely pull some confidence from that, but definitely know we need to get faster."

At Redwood Shores, the Bear's V8+ got the morning started with a strong showing against Northeastern. Racing in ideal racing conditions, the Bears opened up a sizable lead after a tight first 500 meters. By the 1,000-meter mark, Cal had open water between themselves and the Huskies and finished the race with a time of 5:33.82.

In the 2V8+ race, the Bears took the lead early and added to it by the midway point. Cal clocked in with a time of 5:45.35, 15 seconds ahead of the Huskies.
In the final race of the morning from Redwood Shores, the 3V8+ put on a display against Oregon State. The Bears had a strong start that gave Cal the early lead and never looked back. The Bears finished with a time of 5:57.07.

"We used the three races this weekend to try something different and learn something from each race," added Frandsen. "Overall, I'm proud of the guys for being adaptable and responding to what we asked of them. I'm very pleased with these performances, but at the same time, I see areas where we can improve. We have got to get faster if we are going to win a national championship."

At the Ebright Invitational, the Bears 4V8+ soundly defeated the V8+ boat from Santa Clara. Cal finished with a time of 6:30.55 while the Broncos finished with a time of 6:45.28.

Taking on the 2V8+ from UC San Diego, Cal's 5V8+ finished with a comfortable win, clocking in at 6:33.22. The Tritons finished the race with a time of 7:10.68. In the final race of the morning, Cal's 6V8+ defeated two boats from Santa Clara. Cal finished with a time of 6:37.2, the Broncos' 2V8+ clocked in at 6:46.35 and the 3V8+ finished with a time of 7:05.02.

"Good racing from all crews in some really challenging water," said assistant coach Brandon Shald from the Ebright Invitational. "It was a fun weekend of racing and appreciate all the teams that came to the Estuary for some competition."
