7 Wins, Big Finish in the 800 Highlight ASU Twilight Day 1

Apr 22, 2022

TEMPE - Sun Devil Track and Field had a lot to celebrate Friday on the first day of the ASU Twilight Invitational. Seven event victories were recorded, ASU's 20 seniors were recognized and celebrated, Cortney Jones earned her first win in two years, and the men's 800m crew went 1-2-3 in record time. ASU closes out the final home meet Saturday.

Beatrice Llano and Shelby Moran opened the day with a 1-2 finish in the hammer throw where Moran earned a slight PR. Ralford Mullings followed with a 21-foot victory in the discus (63.62m/208' 8"). Switching to the women's side of the event, Jorinde van Klinken extended her national lead by 13 inches to easily win the day. Her 60.53m/198-7 throw hit the qualifying mark for the World Championships so she'll have a busy summer between those and the European Championships in August. Van Klinken's throw is the fifth-furthest in the world right now too.

On the track, Cortney Jones saw her name at the top of the board for the first time since early 2020 when she won the 100m hurdle prelims in 13.06. The last time she was fast was back in 2019 when she ran her 12.72 PR in 2019.

Justin Robinson celebrated another win in the 200m (20.82) and the race of the day was arguably the men's 800m where Dayton Carlson, Vincent Mauri and Adam Meyer all set PRs and took the top three spots.
