Sun Devils Fall Short to Stanford Friday Night

STANFORD, Calif. – No. 10 Arizona State softball (31-6, 12-1) fell to Stanford (30-12, 7-6) 4-1 on Friday night. The Sun Devils were held to three hits, with the only run coming in the first inning.
 
This concludes the 20-game win streak for the Sun Devils and their first loss in conference play this season. The win streak will go down as the fifth longest in program history.
 
Cydney Sanders hit her team-leading 15th home run on the year, it's the fifth straight game that Sanders has hit a home run for the Sun Devils. Her conference leading eighth home run put ASU on the board. 
 
Bella Loomis and Makenna Harper were able to get the other two hits for the Sun Devils, but were unable to be brought in. 
 
The Sun Devils will look to bounce back at 2 p.m. tomorrow as they will face off against Stanford to try to even up the series.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Stanford 4, Arizona State 1

  • Cydney Sanders continued her stellar freshman year with her 15th solo home run of the season for an early 1-0 lead after the first inning.
  • Top of the second Emily Cazares was walked, then a Loomis single had runners on first and second, but were stranded to end the top-half of the second inning.
  • In the bottom of the second, Stanford would score two runs to take a 2-1 lead heading into the third inning. 
  • Stanford scored two more runs in the third inning to lengthen their lead to 4-1.
  • After two scoreless frames, Yanni Acuña reached second on a fielding error, then Jazmyn Rollin was hit by a pitch, but both were stranded as Stanford maintained a 4-1 lead.
