Practice Report: Offensive Line Battle Heats Up On Day 4 Of USC Football Fall Camp

USC began its fourth practice of Fall Camp with the picturesque backdrop of a sun-drenched Peristyle in the background. Monday (Aug. 8) marked the Trojans' third consecutive day in the Coliseum and first day with referees in attendance. 

"First team period there were a lot of penalties," head coach Lincoln Riley said. "One took a touchdown off the board. One kept an offensive drive going. We talked about it a little bit midway through practice; the second team period was a lot cleaner in terms of penalties."

Riley explained, however, that penalties are a natural byproduct of a team that is physical and tough.

"If you go look in the season, typically the teams that have less penalties aren't any good," Riley said. "If you're playing this game, the way it's meant to be played, you are going to have some [penalties], but we've got to teach these guys that they've got to be of the aggressive nature.

"You've got to play ball, those things are gonna happen if you're playing as aggressively as you can. So we've been really trying to just educate our guys on, obviously, what the line is."
 

Notes from USC's fourth practice of camp:

  • Redshirt junior tight end Jude Wolfe did not practice Monday as he wore a protective boot on his left foot.

    • "He's got a little foot issue," Riley said. "We're going to take a look at it and see how it goes. He's been practicing well this camp so hopefully it's not long term."

  • Defensive backs Jaylin Smith, Latrell McCutchin and Bryson Shaw did not dress out for practice as well.

  • Rush end Korey Foreman was not in attendance due to a "prior engagement," Riley said.

  • Offensive lineman Bobby Haskins is back practicing after missing USC's Fall Camp debut on Friday. The redshirt senior, who sat out in spring after receiving surgery on his ankle, said he feels 100% heading into the season.

    • "I'm really, really fortunate to be able to get some live reps, because I'd say that's the biggest thing, obviously, I missed out in the spring," Haskins said.

  • Haskins was a four-year starter at Virginia and transferred to USC with just one year of eligibility. The redshirt senior was asked what he expected when he made the move to Southern California.

    • "An opportunity to compete," Haskins said. "That's all you can ever ask for in life, is an opportunity to compete. And that's what I have, and I'm really excited about it."

  • Offensive line coach Josh Henson shared his take on the Trojans' five starting spots upfront.

    • "Every spot is up for competition. I know it sounds cliche, but it's just the way it is …That's what fall camp is all about. We're grading every practice, every rep we take. And we'll make decisions as we get closer to game time."

 

New numbers to know:

  • Defensive lineman Nick Figueroa, who previously wore No. 50, now dons 99. The redshirt senior wore that number during his stint in junior college.

  • Defensive back Bryson Shaw, who transferred from Ohio State as a redshirt junior this summer, wears 27.

  • True freshman running back Raleek Brown sports the number 14.

  • Wide receiver Michael Jackson III, who previously wore No. 13, now wears the number 9.

  • Wide receiver Jordan Addison wears the once-retired No. 3, after Trojan legend Carson Palmer gave his blessing.

  • Redshirt senior defensive lineman Solomon Byrd, who transferred from Wyoming this summer, dons No. 51.
