Women's Soccer Blanks Colorado State, 3-0

Aug 21, 2022

SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah women's Soccer team picked up its first win of the season with a 3-0 shutout of Colorado State. The Utes had three different players score as the team picked up its first shutout of the season.

"This was a great team win in front of our wonderful fans today," remarked head coach Hideki Nakada. "Colorado State was very committed to their defensive effort, making it difficult for us to create quality opportunities early. We grew into the game, and our wing and midfield play got better as the game wore on, which allowed us to get us in behind more and score quality goals. I am looking forward to hosting a great Denver team here at Ute Field next Thursday night."

The Utes Madeline Vergura, Courtney Brown, and Brooklyn Blaylock scored for the Utes, while Evie Vitali and Kasey Wardle combined for the shutout. Vergura and Blaylock's goals were their first as a Ute.

Early in the contest, the Utes struggled to get anything going on the offensive end. Utah scored the game's first goal in the 20th minute when the Rams were called for a handball in the box. Vergura took the PK and scored, putting Utah ahead 1-0.

Not even five minutes later, the Utes added their second goal of the game. Vergura, who was outside the box, found Brown, who was in the box. The Rams' keeper came out to challenge, and Brown chipped it over her head, extending the Utes' lead to 2-0.

Colorado State had a scoring chance late in the first half as Aleyse Evers had a shot high of goal and Utah took a 2-0 lead into halftime.

Utah wasted no time in extending the lead to 3-0 in the second half. Less than three minutes into the half, Blaylock chased the ball down and controlled the ball just outside of the box. She beat a defender and let a shot from outside the box fly, and she beat the goalkeeper to the top right corner of the goal, for her first collegiate goal.

Late in the game, Kaitlyn Abrams had a quality scoring chance, but Utah's goalkeeper Kasey Wardle made the save, keeping the shutout in tack.

Utah closed the game looking for its fourth goal as Brooke Ahern had a shot that the Rams saved and another go off the post. Utah came away with a 3-0 victory over Colorado State.
