Cal Takes Down Tritons

Aug 28, 2022

BERKELEY – Keely Roy scored twice for California women's soccer as the Bears won, 2-1, against UC San Diego on Sunday afternoon at Edwards Stadium.

UCSD (0-3-0) opened the game with a goal in the fourth minute. However, the lead wouldn't last as the Bears scored late in the first half and late in the second to secure the victory in their regular season home opener.

With only three seconds before halftime, Sydney Collins played a long free kick into the box. Amaya Gray was brought down while attempting to get the ball and was awarded with a penalty kick. Keely Roy made the keeper hesitate as she slotted the ball to the keeper's right to send the Bears into halftime even.

After a back-and-forth second half, the Bears found the go-ahead goal in the 81st minute as Roy scored her second of the game. Karlie Lema started the play as she drove down the right flank and played in a cross, the ball deflected to the top of the box where Roy collected it and hit a seeing-eye shot that went through a pack of defenders and into the side netting, setting off a celebration.

Cal (2-1-0) had a decisive advantage in possession and opportunities throughout the game. Cal had a 15-5 edge in shots and an 8-2 lead in shots on goal. The Bears also forced the Tritons into giving up 12 corners.

UCSD's Kennedy Carter took a shot that was blocked by the Cal defense, but the rebound bounced to Camryn Borg who put it into the net to give the Tritons the early lead in the fourth minute.

After going down early, the Bears fought back with an opportunity to equalize in the 17th minute as the ball fell to Courtney Boone. After a short corner kick was cleared, the Bears recycled the ball and played it to the back post. Boone was waiting for the ball, but her shot went just wide.

Cal worked the wings to get another opportunity in the 30th minute as Ayo Oke dribbled down the right flank, beat a couple of opponents and centered the ball to an onrushing Anysa Gray. Gray's one-time shot forced a last-ditch kick-save that went out for a corner.

In the 66th minute, on the Bears 10th corner of the game, Courtney Boone headed the ball to the back post off the service from Rilee Harmon, forcing UCSD into a goal line clearance by a defender standing on the line.

After Roy's second goal, the Bears were able to see out the game to secure their second win of the week.

Additionally, after spending two seasons out injured, Hannah Cooper made her debut for the Bears as she came on in the 66th minute and played 18 minutes.

The Bears will be back in action on Thursday as they travel across the Bay to take on San Francisco.  The game will kickoff at 7 p.m.  from Negoesco Stadium.
