Ferry’s Brace Leads No. 22 Washington Over Sac State

Sep 15, 2022

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Behind the first career brace of senior Kyla Ferry's career, No. 22 Washington finished out the non-conference portion of its schedule undefeated with a 3-0 victory at Sacramento State Thursday.

The Huskies were on the front foot for the entirety of the affair, outshooting the home Hornets 27-4, including 14-1 in shots on goal. UW also earned 12 opportunities from the corner flag.

It took the Huskies less than three minutes to take the early lead as Ferry buried Summer Yates' corner kick delivery to put UW up 1-0 in the opening minutes.

McKenzie Weinert nearly doubled the Husky lead on two different occasions late in the first half. The graduate student set herself up at the top of the 18 for a shot following a darting run, sending her attempt over the crossbar.

A few minutes later, Weinert's close range effort was denied on an exceptional save from Hornet keeper Mia Shamit, who pushed the shot onto the post to keep the Washington lead at a single goal heading into the break.

Washington came out the second half with the same energy and continued to knock on the door, with a bevy of chances either narrowly missing or being stopped by Shamit.

The Huskies finally broke through to put things away late in the match as Yates found Ferry once again and the Arizona native made no mistake, thumping a shot past Shamit to bulge the back of the net in the 81st minute.

Freshman Kelsey Branson put the cherry on top in the 86th minute, collecting a clearance and unleashing a laser from just outside the 18 into the goal for her first collegiate goal.

With a 6-0-2 record in tow, Washington turns its focus to Pac-12 play, opening up league action on the road at Oregon next Friday at 7 p.m. PT. The match will be available through Pac-12 Insider.
