Hockey Splits with the Beavers to Close Out Road Trip

Oct 8, 2022

BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Arizona State men's ice hockey team (1-3-0) went to overtime for the second time this season courtesy of a 4-4 stalemate and a strong penalty kill in the final minutes  in regulation with Bemidji State (1-1-0) on Saturday night. Robert Mastrosimone notched two goals, his first since transferring to ASU, but the Beavers scored in the final seconds of extra time to split the series.

For the first time this season the Sun Devils were beaten to the scoreboard as the Beavers notched two goals within the first six minutes of play. The BSU lead didn't last for long as back-to-back goals by Matthew Kopperud (PPG) and Josh Doan knotted the score in the opening frame.

The Beavers managed to get the lead back around the midway point, but enter Robert Mastrosimone with his first goal of the season with under a minute in the period to keep the game tied at the first intermission.

The two teams again battled in the second period as BSU tallied a power play goal to stretch into the lead. Again, ASU was quick on the doorstep and scored its own man-advantage goal by Robert Mastrosimone, his second of the night.

The third period was a stalemate until the final five minutes when Ty Jackson picked up a five minute major and a BSU skater tacked on a roughing call. The penalties forced the game into 4-on-4 for two minutes which transitioned to an ASU penalty kill for the remaining three minutes of regulation. ASU's kill held strong, and managed to send the game into overtime for their second overtime game of the season.

In the overtime 3-on-3, TJ Semptimphelter made some monster saves, but the Beavers managed to score in the final minute to pick up their first win of the season.
