Bears Roll Past Utes In Pac-12 Opener

BERKELEY – Junior Isabelle Stadden was a four-time winner and Eloise Riley won three times as the Cal women's swimming & diving team opened up the Pac-12 dual meet season with a 169-123 victory over Utah on Wednesday afternoon at Spieker Aquatics Complex.

Stadden won the 50-yard freestyle event in 23.02, narrowly beating out teammates McKenna Stone (23.10), Emily Gantriis (23.16) and Ella Mazurek (23.20). Stadden also captured the 200 breaststroke with a mark of 1:52.96 while swimming on the Bears' winning relay teams in the 200 medley relay and 200 free relay.

Riley took home wins in the 100 freestyle (50.19) and 200 freestyle (1:49.47) and led off Cal's victory in the 200 free relay, teaming up with Gantriis, Stadden and Mazurek for the win.

Sophomore Fanni Fabian had a strong performance in the distance freestyle events, claiming victory in the 500 freestyle in a time of 4:55.85 and the 1000 free with a mark of 10:04.97.

Ayla Spitz (100 backstroke), Jade Neser (100 breaststroke), Leah Polonsky (200 butterfly) and Alicia Henry (200 breaststroke) all also claimed victories for the Bears.

The Bears took the top three spots in four of the races.

Cal returns to the water Saturday morning with another Pac-12 dual meet at Washington State's Gibb Pool. The action begins at 10 a.m. and will air on Pac-12 Insider.
