Men’s Tennis Claims Two Titles at the ITA Mountain Regional Championships

Oct 17, 2022

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Utah men's tennis team finished another successful tournament on Monday at the ITA Mountain Regional Championships. The Utah program took both titles in the main single and double draws. Geronimo Espin Busleiman claimed the singles title, while Berk Bugarikj and Patrik Trhac won the doubles title.

"I'm really happy for Geronimo, Patrik, and Berk for winning regionals and qualifying for nationals later this semester," remarked head coach Roeland Brateanu. "We improved our play throughout the tournament, battled through adversity, and most importantly, gained valuable information on what we need to improve on for the rest of the season."

Espin Busleiman, Trhac, and Bugarikj qualified for the ITA National Fall Championships from November 4-7 in San Diego, California, by winning the doubles and singles draws.

Bugarikj and Trhac were crowned the champions after facing Francisco Bascon and Matteo Masala from the University of Idaho. Utah finished 4-6, 6-2, 10-3 in a close match going into a tiebreaker set. The last time a Utah team took the doubles title for the ITA Mountain Regional Championships was in 2009 by Phillip Eilers and Alex Golding.

As the singles competition came to a close, Espin Busleiman faced Utah State's David Cierny at the finals of the single draw. Espin Busleiman secured the victory in a 6-3, 6-3 match, awarding Utah the first-place winner in both tournament categories for the first time since at least 2002. The last Ute to hold the first-place title was Utah's Franco Capalbo in last year's ITA Mountain Regional.

The Utah squad will head home and prepare for the upcoming Utah Invite #2, set to take place from Oct. 21-23 at the George S. Eccles Tennis Center.
